Fostering Achievement is a new scheme that aims to help the children and young people develop their potential. Recognising the crucial role that foster carers play in encouraging young people to aim for their dreams, it offers everyone in the foster family practical and financial support.
The package will give foster carers independent access to advice and funding which will help them become first educators
Educational/training credits of around £800 per year will be available in respect of children aged 4 to 17 who have been in care for six months or more. This includes children just beginning school, those whose education has been disrupted, and those with special educational needs or disabilities.
The project will provide:
- Equipment - This could be a computer with access to the internet, musical instruments, sports kits or educational books and toys.
- Personal Development - If a child in foster care would benefit from personal tuition, either in an academic subject or extra-curricular activity such as music or sport, we can help to provide this. The project can also assist young people to learn to drive.
We can provide additional support if a child in foster care has special educational needs, or a disability. Credits will be allocated to encourage personal development, and to fund resources that are not provided by the Education and Library Board or the Health and Social Services Trust.
Training
Workshops are run throughout Northern Ireland to provide foster carers with essential skills. These cover computer skills, child protection and internet safety, helping children acquire literacy and numeracy skills, as well as workshops on how the education system works and how to advocate successfully for a fostered child.
Development workers
Our experienced workers can:
- provide help and advice to foster carers on making the best use of the funds available within this scheme.
- provide one to one support sessions and accompany carers to meetings with schools if necessary.
- identify local sources of help for foster carers, children and young people to help reduce the isolation and social exclusion experienced by some children and young people.
- help to identify gaps in the knowledge and skills of foster carers and enable them to access the appropriate training.
