Letterbox Club

The Letterbox Club is undertaken in conjunction with Booktrust as a means of helping to improve the numeracy and literacy skills of children in P4 and P6. This is an innovative project delivered in Northern Ireland by Fostering Achievement to provide support to children in care aged 7 to 11 years to improve their educational outcomes. Children who are members of the Letterbox Club receive monthly parcels to their foster homes. The parcels are brightly coloured addressed personally to each child and contain reading materials, story CDs, stationery and mathematics games
The aims of the Letterbox Club are to improve children’s educational outcomes in reading and number, support children’s learning at home, support children’s engagement in their own learning, improve children’s attitude towards and enjoyment of learning, and improve children’s confidence and self esteem.
There is evidence that children who participated in the Letterbox Club made significant progress during that period in relation to their reading accuracy and comprehension and also their number skills, as is evidenced in an evaluation of the Letterbox Club by Queen’s University Belfast.
